Business Plans: Wireless Tools
June 21, 2008 10:52 am Business, Business PlansThe ascendance of wireless networks has led to a stampede of wireless products that are attempting to cut all cords. Not only is the laptop wirelessly connected to the network, the printer can be wirelessly connected to the laptop, which can also be wirelessly connected to the scanner, and so on. The desktop is no different. Now there are wireless keyboards, wireless mice, and wireless interactive remote controls which can remotely interact with a desktop computer or a notebook computer.
Even though there are no wires, you still have to have enough ports to connect everything together. So before you go buying a host of wireless peripherals, make certain that you have space for everything and that your PC has all of the required drivers and capabilities. If you do just a little bit of reading while you shop, you will be much less likely to have to deal with the returns department. This is especially true if you are buying a notebook computer as well.
In the early days of the digital presentation, the presenter had to remain relatively close to his or her computer in order to run everything effectively. Now, however, with long range cordless mice, keyboards, and remotes, a presenter can travel all over a room without losing control of his or her presentation. Speed is sometimes still an issue, however. Wireless networks are not usually as fast and wireless devices must report rapidly to their controlled devices in order for commands to be executed promptly.
Infrared Versus Radio Frequency Wireless Devices
With infrared devices, presenters must still maintain direct lines of sight to the sensors, but their operable ranges have gotten much longer. With RF (radio frequency) devices, presenters need not even have direct lines of sight, they need only be within range. Range is an important factor to consider. The difference between a devices stated range and its operable range (with less-than-fresh batteries) can be significant, so assume about 80 percent of the stated range to be closer to the truth.
